President Donald Trump claimed the straw poll and surged past Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at the Western Conservative Summit a little over 24 hours after his federal indictment.
Trump surged past the Florida Governor by 40.3 percent to 35.8 percent, according to a report from the Washington Examiner.
The following closet candidates included:
- Larry Elder, at 7.7 percent
- Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., at 5.8 percent
This led Jeff Hunt, co-chair of the summit, to observe a “two-horse race” developing for the nomination.
“The results are clear — Western grassroots conservatives want a fighter who will take on the radical Left and the institutions that are destroying America’s founding principles,” Hunt said.
The clear triumph for Trump over DeSantis in the straw poll comes just over 24 hours after his unsealed indictment, showing he was charged with 37 felony counts relating to him storing classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago home.
The top issues for attendees at the event going into the 2024 election cycle included:
- Election integrity
- Religious freedom
- Education
- Border security
Earlier this week, Trump publicly proclaimed his innocence following news of his indictment.
The charges listed include an Espionage Act charge, several Obstruction charges, False Statement charges, and a Conspiracy charge.
The Trump War Room account captioned the post:
“I am an innocent man,” Trump began referring to the indictment.
“The Biden administration is totally corrupt. This is election interference & a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time. Make America Great Again!!!” Trump said.

On Saturday, Trump reassured voters he would never leave the 2024 presidential race even if he is s convicted on any of the 38 felony charges in the indictment this week.
“I’ll never leave,” Trump told Politico.
“Look, if I would have left, I would have left prior to the original race in 2016. That was a rough one. In theory, that was not doable.”
