The Biden administration is set to announce sending another $1.3 billion in military aid for Ukraine.
“The United States will announce a new pledge to buy $1.3 billion worth of military aid for Kyiv in its conflict with Russia in the coming days, two U.S. officials said,” Reuters reports Tuesday.
A US official told Reuters that the new package would include new counter-drone systems, exploding drones, ammunition, and air defenses.
The severed arms shortages among the Western allies came weeks after Biden approved sending Cluster bombs to the country.
The funds have been authorized under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) program, meaning the Biden administration will buy weapons from the arms industry.
“Also included are two different types of loitering munitions, the Phoenix Ghost drone made by AVEVEX, a private company in California, and the Switchblade, made by AeroVironment Inc,” the report continues.
The latter system is a ‘suicide drone,’ smaller and less expensive than conventional UAVs.
Twitter owner Elon Musk responded to the news by saying, “Would be nice for the public to have some clue how the money is spent!”
Musk’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the lack of oversight over the tens of billions in funds and arms pumped into Ukraine.
Earlier this week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed that sending even more funds to Ukraine is the “single best” way to aid the global economy.
As The Daily Fetched reported, Yellen also claimed to boost emerging economies while combatting debt distress besides sending billions in taxpayer dollars to Kyiv.
At the G20 finance ministers’ summit in India, Yellen revealed she would “push back” on criticism there was a tradeoff between aid to Ukraine and developing nations.
“Ending this war is first and foremost a moral imperative,” she told reporters.
“But it’s also the single best thing we can do for the global economy,” Yellen added, somehow expecting people to believe that sending billions of taxpayer dollars to Ukraine is going to help the US economically.
Yellen’s comments came on the heels of former Vice President Mike Pence urging for more aid to be sent to Ukraine.
Since the Ukraine war began, the Biden administration and the US Congress have directed more than $75 billion in aid to the country.
